Zambia Prepares to Host First International Mine Rescue Competition in Africa as Kansanshi and Mopani Finalize Preparations
Kansanshi Mining Plc has reached an advanced stage of readiness ahead of the International Mine Rescue Competition (IMRC), positioning itself to successfully co-host the prestigious global safety event alongside Mopani Copper Mines Plc.
Extensive preparations have been undertaken to ensure compliance with international standards, with key facilities and competition areas now nearing completion.
The high level of preparedness reflects a strong commitment to safety, operational excellence, and Zambia’s growing capacity to host world-class mining events.
Historic First for Africa’s Mining Industry
Through the Zambia Chamber of Mines, Zambia will host the International Mine Rescue Competition for the first time on the African continent an important milestone for the country’s mining sector and occupational safety standards.
The competition will be staged at two primary venues: Kansanshi Mining Plc in Solwezi and the Mopani Central Training Centre in Mufulira.
The event is scheduled to run from April 26 to May 5, 2026, with the official opening ceremony set to take place at Garden Court Kitwe.
The closing ceremony will be held in Livingstone on May 5, while core competition activities are expected to occur between April 28 and May 2, 2026, at the two host sites.
Global Participation and Local Representation
More than 22 teams from around the world are expected to participate in the competition, demonstrating advanced mine rescue techniques, emergency response coordination, and safety best practices.
Zambia will be represented by four teams drawn from major mining operations, including Konkola Copper Mines, Lubambe Copper Mine, and NFCA Mining Plc, alongside the host teams from Mopani Copper Mines.
Confidence in Readiness and Safety Standards
First Quantum Minerals Ltd. Country Manager Godwin Beene has expressed confidence in the level of preparedness following inspection tours of both hosting sites.
Dr. Beene, accompanied by a delegation from Mopani Copper Mines including national organizing committee member Maron Chongo visited the Kansanshi facility in Solwezi and the Mopani site in Mufulira to assess readiness for the international event.
During the visits, he commended the progress made at both locations, noting that the facilities are well on track to deliver a successful and professionally managed global competition.
The delegation was guided through the sites by Eric Cousins, Africa Group Safety Manager at First Quantum Minerals, who outlined the key infrastructure upgrades, safety systems, and operational preparations undertaken in readiness for the competition.

Hosting the International Mine Rescue Competition is expected to enhance Zambia’s reputation as a leader in mining safety and operational standards, while also showcasing the country’s technical expertise and readiness to host major international industry events.
